The Sami Tribe's main type of dwelling is a tent called a lavvo, which was mentioned previously in the website. Now the lavvo is a type of seasonal dwelling. For the Sami people to chose a site they must make sure that the surrounding environment reflects certain environmental values, such as altitude, average temperature and food sources. Now the lavvo is a temporary dwelling, meaning that the Sami tribe can not be settled in permanently. So they build the lavvo to simply assist them in moving quick with their reindeer herds.
Now the Lavvo looks indeed very similar to an American Tipi, however it is not. Its position is usually a bit centered to the ground and therefore has the capabilities of enduring harsh winds from the Tundra of Scandinavia. The overall completed design of the Lavvo is actually reflective of the community of the Sami Tribe. It is designed for a quick set up and a quick getaway. Even nowadays the Lavvo is being employed as the main dwelling for the Sami Tribe. Now the materials that were being involved in the building process of Lavvo's include Reindeer Gut as a substitution for thread, however after the industrial revolution the Lavvo's became more diverse and were made up of canvas and other material obtained through trade, as you can see in the diagram above there is also the employment of pins.
Reindeer Gut and even other kinds of wood, would act like thread and poles. There are no disadvantages, with the exception of heavy rainfall, which is a rare event in those regions. The advantages are the endurance of these various materials to protect and shelter the Sami people from very harsh winds.
